I'm late to this discussion because I've got a bit of spare time leading up to Christmas.

 

My architect brother was the AutoCad guru at his office in the 70's to get them proficient in CAD design. I never liked CAD of any kind as my skill/talent was on the drawing board and always preferred the art work side of design - (won a few awards Mackintosh School of Art Glasgow). BUT eventually moved to "CAD" when I discovered SoftPlan in 2008. Immediately took to it like a duck to water. I found that I could work with the same feel and expression as I did on the drawing board and my SotfPlan drawings reflect my hand-drawing style.  My drawing board still sits in my office for when I need some free-hand sketch inspiration but that's about all - thinking of selling it actually!  

 

My big advantage was I never touched AutoCad - after watching my brother hammering away at keyboard commands - so I guess I'm not really in a position to judge!

Your brother had Autocad in the 70’s?  We didn’t get Autocad here until early ‘80’s.

I started on Autocad version 2.17B on a Tandy computer with a digitizer tablet that I had to program (no mouse or pull/drop down menus), I was one of the first Autocad stations in my city.  When I went back to tech. school  as a mature student I challenged their Autocad classes, passed all their tests with flying colors and ended up becoming a teachers aid in my Autocad class. To me Autocad was the next best thing to sex that was until I was introduced to Softplan in 1991.  After a short time working with Softplan I never went back to Autocad.

I had a meeting  the other day with a client I drew a plan for back 1988, it was on SoftPlan Version 2!

Did you say a Tandy computer?   I so miss Radio Shack!
