I am rendering to file so as to create a HI-RES rendering image for a client poster / promo..

I am using the commands FILE > SAVE > SAVE AS > IMAGE > Render to file > Custom..

Doing this the maximum image size seems set at 32000.. I type in anything larger than 32000 and I get 32000..

is this new ? the resulting JPEG is only 1,376 KB, so not all that large..

I need some help... how do I create even larger resolution ?

- any way around the 32000 limitation ?

- will other formats (.tif or .png or .bmp) result in greater resolution than JPEG ?

- another way to do this ?

THANKS

.png was recommended to me once by SP for the highest quality,  don't think its compressed so your file size will be a monster using your image size of 32k

The biggest I've generated was 16200 x 7580 and that was 32.2MB, so if your file size of 1.376MB is correct, there's no way thats 32000, so somethings amiss somewhere.

Typically prints would be at 300 dpi ... large posters designed to be viewed from a distance can get away with 120 dpi, so even 32000 pixels should be able to generate a 267" wide print ...

THANKS ALL..

yes.. generating as PNG, TIF or BMP creates MUCH larger files (and I assume higher resolution) than identical settings saving to JPEG.. that's something new I've learned

however, I'm getting a hiccup with the "background" being generated differently when saving to PNG, TIF or BMP.. I'll post that in a new thread..

There's definitely something wrong with the CUSTOM RESOLUTION settings in 2022.

Doing some tests, it seems that they are coming out at a much lower resolution than intended, whatever the file format used.

Setting a resolution of 16000 x 9000 resulted in a PNG that was in the 4000 x 3000 range ... I can't remember exactly what, I did it on a different computer ... but certainly NOT what I set. It was only 3MB ish too.

The file size cap in version 2022 is the same as version 2020.

There does seem to be an issue with the background when saving an image to a PNG file using DX12. That has been reported on CO-54118.

Brent,

Can you let us know what that file cap size is please, as none of my test are coming out correctly. A custom export on my system is NOT coming out at the size specified in the dialog box.

The 32000x32000 limit is part of the bitmap standard as the maximum possible size.  It is a theoretical maximum as memory required for this was over 3 GB of contiguous memory.  At the time the standard was made this was impractically large.
The DX12 renderer currently has a maximum of 4096x4096 and will scale to preserve aspect ratio. This is because the DX12 relies heavily on the graphics hardware for its speed etc.  Current graphics hardware would not process larger images fast enough without TDR (timing out the card).  The DX11 renderer may create larger images as it is not as reliant on the hardware for different parts of the algorithm.

That makes more sense, I have my system set to the DX12 renderer, so the 4096 x 4096 would be the maximum setting. Not exactly high resolution though, at least compared to what DX11 was capable of.

I just loaded the latest patch and cannot even get a rendering in Ray Trace to work. It keeps crashing.
