Not sure what the "group" column on the Layers panel is for, is anyone using it?

Great question!!
I'd wondered that also, its annoying, too wide and taking up valuable space on my screen now that we can attach the layers dialog box. when i make the column narrower it doesn't stay for long before defaulting back to the way it originally started.
Either get rid of that column or give us the ability to make it tiny or move it to the last right column.

I use it to make a "client set" of plans that do not include certain information I do not want them to see. I have created a Marketing group where I can just toggle that group of layers on or off with just one click.

If you use groups, then you'd realise why it needs to be where it is - Moving it right isn't an option.
It allows you to group sub layers and turn them ALL on or off together.

I'm confused as to why this column can not be moved, some folks use groups and some do not. These cells should have a movable slider like the rest, layer name is more important then groups which I do not use.

Joseph - think of it as the grouping that is done in spreadsheets. If you have ever done much work in spreadsheets, you can group a bunch of rows into one group and then either show the group or not. Another similar comparison is in Windows Explorer. It's like a folder that has a lot of files and/or other folders inside of it that you can choose to open and show or not. This is the same thing for groups in layers. You may want to set various items to different layers in your drawing so that you can turn them on or off at will. Several of these may fall within a common category and that would be your group name. If you look at Keith's example above, he has a number of layers that are all part of the "Proposed" group name. These layers help to identify the items that will be shown, or not shown, in this group.
