Anybody know of any best practices for drawing a knee wall for roof bearing on the plan? Right now I have the roof raised up to get the frieze at a certain spot so its not on the top plat of the wall. I would like to add a knee wall somehow without blocking things up so that my cross sections shows the framer the bearing height of the room above the top plate which in my case is 11" or so. things I have tried.... I have created a knee wall wall that is just studs plates and plywood sheathing. I have tried drawing it directly on the main floor drawing but that messed up my wall cleanups... I also tried adding as a separate drawing and dropping it in the model, but that didn't end well either. My issue is only compounded by the fact that I have different roof pitches and I want to keep my eave height the same for both.

Thanks for any help on this.

Shane

Try making your knee walls hidden. That will prevent them from messing up the cleanup for the other walls.

Hmm. Thats a thought.... Do you know if they still show up on your cross section drawings?

I have tested.... And it seems to be working... Thanks for the help.... I tried this yesterday and caused myself some significant grief. So far this seems grief free. Would you draw on the main plan positioning them above the existing walls or on their own drawing? I guess I could have on the same drawing just place on a different level maybe? still learning how to not cause myself a headache. :)

  1. Draw your main walls in first, the ones that you will see in the plan.
  2. Draw the knee walls off to the side a bit.
  3. Edit the knee walls and set their height and offset so that the bottom of the knee wall is at the height of the top of the plan wall.
  4. On the Common tab for the knee wall uncheck Cleanup. This will prevent the knee wall from dropping down to the foundation after a cleanup.
  5. Set the knee walls to Hidden.
  6. Move them to be on top of the lower walls.

Thanks... With a little trial and error what you have described is almost exactly what I did. Thanks for the information.
