I am still pretty new to Softplan.  I am quite impressed with most features of the program but I find dimensioning to be quite frustrating at times.  Manually dimensioning is extremely easy but the auto dimensioning can be a little frustrating at times.

Are most of you experienced users manually dimensioning as much as possible or letting it auto dimension as much as possible?

I find that the auto dimensioning frequently chooses odd places for the extension lines, which complicates things.  Even though I don't use auto dimension for interior walls it will auto dimension interior walls sometimes.

I am currently working on the most complicated project that I have designed with Softplan.  I am getting ready to finalize drawings and prepare construction documents.  I lack some confidence in the dimensions and feel like I have to meticulously scrutinize every dimension extension line, etc. which makes the auto functionality not so "auto."

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

I sometime use auto dimensioning at the start but at some point turn it off because dimensions constantly alter to much.

I auto dimension after I have all the exterior walls are in place and then manually dimension everything else. Can speed up dimensioning windows and doors in exterior walls with the "Group Dimension" tool.

You can change the settings so interior walls are not included in auto dimension.  I usually auto dimension and then quickly change the few that are not done the way I want them.

I always AUTO DIMENSION all exteriors multiple times as the drawing progresses since it cleans up neatly as walls are adjusted. The only time Auto Dimensions annoys me is when you have a brick wall and a siding wall meet at an exterior corner, as it always dimensions to the back of the brick. However, since I know it's going to do it, cleaning it up manually isn't to much of a chore.

It's just so much quicker to use AUTO DIMENSION than to do it all manually and tidy the spacing up later.

With 2016 I've found I have to be careful dimensioning foundation walls, AUTO DIMENSION is fine, but quickly adding manual dimensions, I've found that sometimes the extension is from the footing not the wall.

Typically, if you have exterior porches with beams at corners AUTO DIMENSION will dimension to the beams and NOT the walls behind them. If you temporarily pull the beams off the walls, then AUTO DIMENSION will dimesion to the wall, and then you can put the beams back.

i always manually dimension my plans.  Sometimes I hit the auto dimension button to get the process started.

I always auto dimension the exterior and manually dimension the interior.

I auto dimension at first to clean up the dimensions as I am working forward, but always go back and use manual to clean up the project and make sure the all dimensions that need to be on the plan are there.
