I use a raised wall then match it to the roof.

Have you tried a gable vent yet? Can you replace the grill with shingle siding if you make a custom vent?

Ended up using Joseph Smith's raised wall technique - worked well enough, and quickly enough, for a series of quick color studies. Thanks all!
