Hello,

I'm looking to use Dropbox to store all my Softplan files to ease my syncing issues between a laptop and desktop. Currently using SpiderOak and it is becoming more of a headache than an asset.

So looking for input (and hopefully the exact process) from those who currently install the program files to DB and use multiple machines.

Do I install the program on my desktop saving it to a DB location and then point my laptop to that location? Install on both machines and only put some files on DB? Many questions...

My thought (hope) is that once on DB any changes that I make to the system, project or drawing level would then be synced and ready to use on the other machine, respectively. When I make symbols or textures, etc that those would be the same on both machines. When I make drawing & planset templates that they would be the same on both machines. This is currently working on SpiderOak but the syncing is sometimes quite delayed or buggy. Looking for a smoother process.

Thanks in advance for the input.

ps: I did a search and found some okay discussion, but nothing related to 22+, or very recent.

I only save drawing files to dropbox.  Program is loaded on each machine locally

I have used DropBox for years with no issues syncing mutliple machines.

In System options you can change the location for symbols, 3d symbols and textures.

Most of the other system options might become unstable if they are not properly located within the Softplan directory.

I make frequent System Options Backups and save them on Dropbox.

That gives you the opportunity to restore anything important as needed.

We have done NAS and all kinds of other options. Dropbox Pro works great. Don't get sucked into a reseller

I use Dropbox mostly for project files also - they stay there so I can work on them from the office, and in the evening, at home. I backup to a Dropbox folder, too, then restore from there on the other machine when needed. I don't think the other thing you're trying to do is possible on Dropbox - program files need to be installed on each local machine, but with backup/retore you'll keep things in sync. I try to keep most of the changes to my office machine only, then restore to the home machine.

thanks for the input all.

I've ended up continuing with SpiderOak as it syncs and backs-up all the system and project files. I'm able to update anything on either machine and they are kept in sync. One less thing to think about...until something with the sync process goes awry. Just looking elsewhere and though DB might work out.

I have been using Dropbox for the past several years and I love it.   All of my project files are up on DropBox in a folder labeled 'Projects'.   So obvious.   The rest of the firm has access to this folder.   So the 'latest & greatest' pdf files, job site pics, documents, etc are accessible to everyone.   The base Softplan folder i is on the c: drive of both my laptop and home desktop.      However symbol libraries, (both 2D & 3D), as well as all other libraries are in a separate Dropbox folder.    I can create a symbol with a 3D link on my desktop, go home to the laptop and pick up where I left off seamlessly.

My only issue is occasionally  getting to the office and forgetting I left my key at home.
