At the end of the comments on page 3, Joe does a good job explaining the benefits of the hardware key

Why not have the key as normal, and a limited number of times between, key use, where you can use a code unique for your key before you must use the key again ( 5 times to use the code). That gets every one out of a sticky patch, and a stop can be put on the system if both the key and code are used at the same time.
