I have two decks on the back of a house I am drawing.  I used the "Align to Edge" feature to move the 2nd deck up flush against the 1st deck.  I want to have the second deck lower by a step or two.  When I edit the offset of the 2nd deck or move the 2nd deck in a 3D view mode it moves the 1st deck with it.

Any ideas how to deal with this?

Thank you.

Rich

i've never experienced one deck moving when it's touching

another deck but for some components like posts/columns and beams,

if you have "attach" checked" one will move when you move the other.

to stop this from happening you

UNcheck "attach" which is probably highlighted (which means it's active) among the icon at the top.

note:  "attach" is at the top.

btw,  decks have "LEVELS"  if decks are at different "OFFSET"  than you have

to assign a different level to each deck.

btw,

I tried it by moving one deck to touch a 2nd deck and when I moved one, the other didn't move.

it might be that the "align to edge"  attached the two decks together.

Even using align to edge to join the two deck I cannot duplicate your problem Rich.

i also tried it exactly like rich and keith did it and i couldn't get one deck

to move when moving one.

I used 2 different levels,  same levels etc,

with attach ON and OFF.

============================

update:

just checked moving the decks again with all

the settings the same except different level.

this time, with attach on,  I would move the ring joist

and joist on that deck and the ring joist on the other

deck would move together but the joists on]

the other deck didn't move.

I have a feelings there might be a small glitch but not sure.

Attach was highlighted.  I unselected attach and assigned the deck to a different level and it worked perfectly.

Thank you both.

... assigned the deck to a different level and it worked perfectly.

Now that really confuses me. I don't believe that decks can be assigned to levels. How did you draw your deck Rich?

Keith you can assign a level to a deck. Draw the deck. Go to Deck _ Level and draw a box around the deck. It will then prompt you for a level number.

Thanks Phil.

Seems odd that it doesn't report that ANYWHERE in the EDIT dialogue box. Because of that (I assume ... maybe because I'm unobservant) I've never even noticed it. Having said that, it's never seemed to be necessary for decks. They don't seem to stick together quite like floor levels do.

Funny how often you don't notice that Softplan added new commands "x" versions ago.

@ Rich ... Apologies. Ignore me, I'm an idiot.

Also, sometimes you may need to have a different size ring joist (ex. 2" x 10") with 2" x8" joists. Exploding the deck allows you to edit the ring joists and deck joists just like a floor system so you can put your ring joist and deck joists on 2 different levels to adjust the offset to have the top level.

Ps Keith. For someone that helps so many people, you're sure tough on yourself.

Does seem odd that if you explode the deck you get a reported level for everything (and they still report as deck components), but you don't get a level if you don't explode it.

sp help has a little on the subject:

Specifying Levels for Deck Items

Specifying levels in the deck plan allows you to create a deck system whose various parts are tied together as a unit having the same offset, offset direction, and depth and width of joist.

When first drawn, deck items (ring joists, floor joists, decking) are placed at level 1. When creating decks with different levels, you may want to place different decks of your deck plan at different heights. To make this easier, you can specify the same level number for all components of the deck plan that are to be set at the same level. Then, when you raise or lower any one component of a deck level, and do a Cleanup, all components of that level will automatically adjust as well. This allows for ease in editing. For example, if a joist depth were to be changed from say 9.5" to 11.875", all joists whose level number matched that of the one edited would also update their depth to 11.875".

You can change the level of particular items in one of the following ways:

·    Edit individual component in the deck plan to the level desired. Note that:

      -  If the deck components have been drawn simultaneously or as a pre-combined deck unit, you must first explode (ctrl + e) the deck area

into its individual deck components before their levels can be changed.

·    Select Draw ® Deck ® Level. Use the Level command to simultaneously change the level of a number of items.

For details on the Level command, see Specifying Levels for Joist Items.
