Interesting project -I think it would look nice with a radius to transition between the wall and soffit and maybe the walls above the high beam/band where the soffit material

if doing a tapered soffit on a flat roof,
softplan profiles can handle that easily.
here i did a tapered soffit with steps.
you could cut this out of a 2 x 14
NOTE: also notice in the later versions of softplan,
you can create "shadow boards" with any profile you want.
here's a simple stepped profile shaow board.
you can create curved shadow boards using
existing profiles from the different trim libraries.

for those who might do a tapered soffit under a flat roof (not a sloped roof as glenn did),
you can create a custom "banding" profile (also try using a frieze,or other profile libraries)
and than draw in the banding and offset it's "offset" (this is a vertical offset) as needed.
showing a tapered soffit cut from a 2x14 (or any size needed for the taper design).
note: these profiles can be drawn in a few minutes. use a vertical and horizontal line to
start for guides. than draw lines and / or arcs to intersections of the horz ;/ vert "guide lines"

OK, now how do you add a 42" high parapet wall above the roof surface with some openings for lines of site?...railings will be in the openings for fall protection of course.
Thanks Again

Draw any wall to suit 42" high with an offset to suit the top of the roof.
Draw cross openings as necessary and add standard railings into the openings. Adjust the railing heights to suit the cross opening parameters.
