Which location is used more often?  Cabinet or countertop?

I'd say both are used. Often we need to show clearance between cabinets and counters. Yes, you can add a note, but why when we ought to be able to select either?

Cabinets here too.   Trim carpenters need to know where to place the cabinets.  The countertops installers don't care where the cabinets are, just that their top is sitting on them.

I do use the extensions on the countertops to show bar overhangs though.

I agree with Mark. Typically the cabinet body is the point of dimensioning, however there are times where clearances need to be shown from countertop edges. I find this to be more common when working on commercial buildings where ADA regulations must be taken into account when designing a layout.

I do not understand the issue. I can dimension cabinet to cabinet or countertop to countertop using Dimension Point.

correct....do not want to have to use dimension pt.   with "symbol" highlighted you should be able to dimension cab to cab.  Thats how it was in SP20 and should have remained.

SP.... Any updates on this?

With all the idiosyncrasies associated with final cabinet design one to not bother with is dimensions.

Users requested the ability to dimension to countertops. The dimension command places a dimension between the nearest dimensionable items which now is the countertop. Dimension point places a dimension between two dimensionable points, skipping over other dimensionable items.
This is the command that you would use to dimension to a cabinet box while passing through the counter top. It is unlikely that SoftPlan would remove the ability to dimension to countertops given that you can dimension to cabinets using an existing command. Providing an option or preference is a larger change because it would require a change to both the user interface and to the configuration file format. CO 53709

That's very disappointing.  Big miss.

Yes, agreed.

I always dimension to cabinets. Only when there is something tight or large overhangs on countertops do I dimension them, and dimension point is more than adequate for that.

The question is did more than 50% of users ask for it, or was it just a few people that asked if it was possible. just because some people asked, doesn't make it a preference for everybody, and that's what you seem to be implying!

In the past you could not dimension to a countertop using any of the methods. Now users who want the countertop and users who want the cabinet can both get the desired result, they just have to use the appropriate dimension tool for the geometry at play. We realize this is less convenient for some than it used to be, but the capabilities are still there.

In 2020 you can put an extension on a countertop and dimension it that way.

The only time I would need to dimension a countertop would be an island or peninsula with an overhang.  The more comments I read about 2022, the more I think I'll stick with 2020

Softplan uses or assumes the the over hang is 1"  I see in real life situations, especially with solid tops, granite, marble and others, overhangs are from 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 of an inch.   So my vote is cabinet.
