I dislike trying to get a dimensions of a 3-1/2"x3-1/2" square...newel posts or anything else small and rectangular.....the extension never grabs and goes the proper direction...generally takes me 3 attempts each time.. very frustrating and slows down my process.
only once case i love the extension feature would be cross openings at my foundation I use r.o. vs centers.
pretty sure your same issue but less eloquent.

Hey Sam. I don't know that I would recommend holding off on upgrading. Version 2022 has a ton of improvements that are spectacular. My only problem is the changes they made regarding single extensions and some problems with schedules. Other than that version 2022 is the best version ever.

I finally started a remodel job in 2022 as my first full project with the upgrade. A few kinks getting worked out. Certainly some features I have to get used to. I agree with Joe - it does not work well on smaller objects. Gotta zoom way in to be sure it is correct.
I don't find it bad with remodel projects where I ultimately prefer to dimension to center of openings, but need the rough or frame dimensions for layout of as-built drawings. I prefer center line dimensions for a cleaner look and a little less liability on the final sizing (contractors and owners always seem to make changes before final windows are ordered).

Having not upgraded yet - due to workload and three of us having to upgrade together - I find it hard to comment, but the concept seemed good to me. My problem has always been the constant changing of centre to edge dimensioning, so the idea was good ... ish.
My preference, that I had suggested on more than one occassion, was TWO separate extension options on the toolbar. Where we have ONE single extension at the moment, I suggested that we have one EDGE EXTENSION icon and one CENTRE EXTENSION icon, so that you could PRESELECT whichever you wanted very quickly.
Obviously Softplan thought this way was better ... from what I hear, maybe not so!

Keith, what I had suggested is that they leave single extensions unchanged from previous versions but if you hold the shift key down while dragging the extension then you could select the location where you wanted the extension to pull from. That way you could choose how you wanted single extension to behave. Normally it would behave as it always has. But if you hold the shift key you could select the edge or center of an opening or shape. Having single extension just completely ignore the extension settings really messes everything up for me and causes tons of extra work.

I love this idea! Hope they implement it into the next patch....I'm not 100% convinced on the new extension feature - always takes a few tries to get the right extension

'Align to edge' command requires me to hit the escape key to get out of the command
Quickly editing interior dimensions requires me to hit the escape key to get out of the command
These are my two most hated time wasting features of the 2022 release.

years ago i taught myself to use the mouse on the left so i could use 9 key pad right handed efficiently when typing dims and number data....at this point slapping the esc is pretty quick. Thanks Bill.

Prime example of Bills comment. the below took 4 tries to create this simple extension....it kept trying to go the horizontal direction.

Prime example of Bills comment. the below took 4 tries to create this simple extension....it kept trying to go the horizontal direction.
The direction of the extension line depends on the location (direction) of the cursor when the end point of the extension line is chosen. It is all proximity based, meaning that in the example below releasing the cursor in the yellow area will result in a vertical extension while releasing in the cyan area will result in a horizontal cursor.
The further zoomed out you are from the object you are pulling the extension from the more important it becomes to move the cursor accurately, that is into the yellow zone and not in the cyan..
Hope this helps.
