I will use keyboard shortcuts for these or click on them in the menu and then click a symbol and nothing happens. This is only happening on two of the drawings in the file, the rest are fine.

I had something similar happen the other day. Try CTRL+R, that did it for me.

Perhaps you have a multi-drawing set up and the item you are trying to modify is not on the active drawing. Or the items could be on a layer that is set to Locked.
