OK..I passed along your question to Chris Welton. He is really good at Lumion. His youtube page is here...
Thanks Allen,
After working on this so far this morning, I think I have it figured out! All you really need to do is make several different .FBX exports showing the different options and then link them with the 'Variation Control' feature in Lumion. Its that simple. Pretty easy way to show multiple building options to clients without wrecking your model!

Lumion 10 New feature tour...worth a watch. The "real time" preview as Chris said will be "game changing" this will save considerable time...No more temp renders, over and over to find the "best" one.

Lets face it though Allen ... your PC isn't exactly average!
Excellent work though.

I wish i could take credit for it....Lumion ships with example scenes....That is an example scene...i just rendered the images out for an example.
Correct, my computer is not average. I love tech and am willing to pay for it.

Hi guys,
I know I may be hijacking this thread since it is primaliry Lumion discussion, but thought I'd ask for opinions and advice on how to get the best renderings directly out of Softplan since you're all more knowledgeable than me and I'm sure you have honed your skills over time. As much as I'd like to take the plunge into Lumion (have dabbled on trial version, Twin Motion as well) I'm not there yet in terms of rendering volume and for the most part Softplan can handle what we need to provide to clients and builders for right now. However, I'm always looking to improve my process and get to the next level. Wanted to ask for any tips and tricks you guys would be willing to share as it relates to overall rendering principles and techniques. I'm constantly tweaking my render settings as I progress on each project to gain efficiency on the next job.
Attached is an example created in SP. I typically render out the image at SP's highest setting, 8192 x 6144 and then I scale it down to 1920 x 1080 in Pixlr (free and awesome online editor - btw).
Any constructive criticism is appreciated. And as always, thanks for sharing what you all know! I've learned a ton on this forum since jumping into Softplan a couple years ago!
Thanks - Mark

Mark, great work.
I would use panoramic clouds 1.
Are you displaying lines? Line thickness 3
Anti alias 10
enable depth relief
Lighting, custom checked, ambient 8, headlight 3, check shadow
One problem with SP is the grass is flat. Huge miss....if grass looked like grass in SP that would help you A LOT.
Really love your detail.

Id be happy to render this out in Lumion as an example. If interested let me know. I can do possibly squeeze it in today. I will not charge you.

Thanks Allen! I will definitely go back and read those threads again. For settings I usually go back and forth on displaying lines thickness (at 3 as you mentioned). Sometimes I think lines show if I have any "sloppy" areas at fascias, trim, etc. I'm usually 7 or 10 on AA. I'll look into the lighting settings too. That's an area I know I need to practice on.
Also forgot to mention I usually stay in textured mode with my custom settings, and haven't really gotten into ray tracing mode. Not sure if that would make a difference.
And you are soooo right about the grass. I feel like even if I push to create the highest quality model and landscaping imagery, the flat grass just brings everything down to far less realism.

One thing that would help us all is if we stop displaying everything on "flat" surfaces.
I need to start elevating the "top of foundation" 24"s above the street and get really good at the driveway slope, walkway, etc. There will be a lot of shotpoints. Ive been working on it with my approach/curb and am trying to get an efficient way of doing it and showing it.

example.... It probably wont be noticeable on these examples but the HD displacement in Lumion 10 is really nice. See this link
