I am realizing for the first time in this era of the 2020 install that textures and symbols can be shared between different versions of SoftPlan (at least 2018 and 2020). Has anyone else noticed or used this in streamlining their libraries and keeping files limited?

Further explanation - when I installed the beta version of 2020, my symbols and textures from 2018 somehow got hijacked and moved to the 2020 version folders. Instead of reinstalling and then using an exclusive folder for my symbols and textures for 2018 again, I just pointed the 2018 system options to use the symbols and textures from the 2020 folders. Also, I have been able to save new textures and symbols to those folders while working in 2018. I have not run into any issues so far.

I just uninstalled 2018 and 2020 to start fresh with both and am back to duplicate folders for the moment, but want to get rid of the 2018 folders if there is no negative consequence. If anyone has thoughts or suggestions to the contrary please advise!

Thanks,

Mark

I was just wondering about this since we share over Dropbox- so far no issues.

I have thought about moving my libraries to Dropbox so they are more accessible and automatically backed up.

I like your idea Mark.  Would there be any delay accessing symbols from an internet based device?    Currently i have all my symbols, opening, etc stored on an extremely fast SSD so there is no lag.

I tried some basic symbols (drawn in 2020) that I shared with 2018 and it did not work. I guess if the symbols we wanted from 2018 get moved to 2020 that is not a problem (unless they get edited in 2020), but any new ones will not be backward compatible (which is what I would expect, but had hopes that somehow would work).

That said, textures certainly ought to work (not verified as of this posting). And, again, any previously drawn/saved symbols from an earlier version of SP still should open in the older version they were created in no matter what folder they now reside in.
