It can take over 45 seconds to copy a few objects out of my common drawing into new drawings.

The copy time can be as long from new drawings as well.

It's like the program is going through every item one by one to figure out which to copy or not, even when zoomed in on only specific items to be copied.

All other programs, including AutoCAD, take less than a second.

  • My common drawing is where I keep a lot of repeatable stuff used commonly in drawings.
  • The paste part goes fine.
  • SP has been like this since 2012.
  • Told SP Improvements shortly after 2018 release. No improvement yet.

Anyone else have this issue?

I don't have a problem with the clipboard speed (no delays).

I do the same as you.  I have items, notes, etc that I routinely copy over from drawings set up for that purpose.  Mine is not rocket fast but not as slow as you describe.

I had that issue some time ago. I had to weed out a lot of things from my common drawings to speed up the copy time.  I hope this helps.

No problems on my end.  I had one drawing with all my standard notes on it that seems to lag really bad.  Support suggested making them into speed notes rather than detail notes which helped a bunch.

No problem here as well. And that is operating through a remote file system. I had a problem once when I imported a complex Autocad drawing (a Wolfe range) and exploded it because it generated 1000's of objects.

I find that multi-notes and other detailed drawings can really bog down the system. When I try copy/paste on larger jobs with lots of details and notes my system can churn for a long time no matter what I am trying to copy and paste. Sometimes it causes crashes. I do need to free up some disk space as I am sure that has some play in the performance.

Why use a common drawing?

I have several libraries set up for speed notes and a hotkey to get me there. I've also sorted my symbol libraries so the common ones are at the top and created a specific library for symbols I've created that SP doesn't have. No copying and pasting, just scroll through the lists.

HI Tom.

There is some great feedback there with different options used by others.

If you want us to look at the items that you are Copying/ Pasting, please create a ticket and let us know the typical procedure that you use.

Brent Hyndman and SoftPlan Company,

Simply build a really, really, really large drawing and try it yourself.

As you read above, I am not the only one SoftPLan bogs down their machine.

I love SoftPlan and Tech Support is great; however in this situation I know the outcome.

I send file you tell me to bust it up in smaller files and the real problem is never addressed.

The clipboard is slow and bogs down the machine when copying from large files.

Not only is the clipboard slow, all large files bog machines down.

In a large SP detail drawing I can hover over a line for seconds before it will move or copy.

It's faster to do line drawings of details, sections and site plans from surveys in AutoCAD then import them back.

No one wants to hear this, BUT all AutoCAD users of SoftPlan know what I mean when I say:

AutoCAd doesn't bog down machine and files sizes are about a tenth of the size.

They have found a way to ignore items not on the screen.

I other words; as I zoom in on an area to work on, all other objects are ignored.

There are a few drawbacks with this but they do not outweigh a slow machine.

I have Adobe Creative Cloud Programs including Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and More.

We're talking top of the line Photo and Video editing software.

They take awhile to load but then rock on once in use.

Nothing is worse than paying top dollar for a fast machine to only have it bogged down by one program, SoftPlan.

Wanted to add incase other agree with this:

After working with a job, the longer it's open the worse it gets.

Also plan sets get impossible to work with.

I have to close and reopen plan set tabs many times.

Closing and reopening program also helps.

I put all my notes on a single drawing and then propagate them as necessary ... with cut and paste to Softplan's clipboard ... across ALL the drawings in the plan set to ensure that I've used them all. Cut from notes drawing - paste onto Section, Cut unused notes from section - paste onto foundation plan etc. etc. It's much more of a hassle that it ever was using a notes drawing on a multi-drawing and then moving the notes to where they were relevant. However, it's working even though it's tedious.

I use CTRL to select ALL the notes and then go to COPY TO SOFTPLAN CLIPBOARD

I found originally, if I left them highlighted on the source drawing, that moving anything to paste into place was VERY VERY slow, and  I've since learned to UN-HIGHLIGHT everything prior to paste operations, which substantially speeded operations up. So I have seen the clipboard being slow, and can easily believe that is still slow using large amounts of data.

The great thing about Softplan, is that there is always more than one way to achieve a given end, and I personally work in a manner that works for me, regardless of how anyone else does it.

I found it VERY frustrating to be told originally that I should be putting all my notes directly onto the plan set. That really doesn't work for me, and I must support Tom in wanting to work in a method that works for him.

It would be easy to say break everything into smaller chunks and it will be quicker, but obviously the common drawing method is working for him, and it would be in everyone's interest to have a fix rather than be told to use an alternate method.

Just my 2¢ worth ...

What’s New | SoftPlan 2018.4.4
Model Drawings – Performance
Changes have been made to ensure that a high number of model drawings does not cause performance lag when trying to add items to a drawing.

Just installed latest Patch/Upgrade.
Not sure if this is related to this post's topic.
Time will tell.
