What is the best way to go about getting two different materials on a gable end. For instance, lap siding on the wall that goes up the gable about half way then the upper part of the gable would be b&b. I know I can do one material on the wall and another on the gable but I want the material transition a little higher than the plate line like the sketch attached.

I normally do it with a separate wall. Just Siding. Hidden in plan, and just slightly in front of the plan wall. Set height you want and fit to roof.

Edit the gable end roof edge and see attached. The "Height" is the distance from the peak to where the transition occurs.
Doesn't adjusting the height upwards, leave a gap between the top of the wall and the gable end provided by roof? It seems to when I've used it.

No it does not leave a gap. It moves the transition between the 2 type of wall materials to the indicated "Height" from the peak.
Thank you ... I'll have to look at it again.
